Cuba denies ongoing or planned negotiations with the United States

On September 7, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez announced that no negotiations or agendas were underway or planned between Cuba and the United States. Rodriguez stated that the U.S. trade embargo, which he described as a "genocidal" blockade, caused over $8.1 billion in economic damages in the last year, a 7 percent increase from 2024. The Cuban government attributed worsening nationwide blackouts and food spoilage to a Trump administration oil blockade that has significantly reduced energy output. While the U.S. maintains that sanctions are necessary to force political change, the United Nations has characterized the measures as a violation of international law.

Cuba reports record economic damage from US embargo

On September 7, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez reported that the US trade embargo, which has been in place since 1962, caused record losses exceeding US$8 billion between March 2025 and February 2026. Rodriguez stated these damages, which exclude impacts from recent energy blockades and secondary sanctions, rose seven percent compared to 2025. While Havana attributed the island’s chronic food, fuel, and electricity shortages to these US measures, Washington maintained that the crisis stemmed from poor internal management.
