Georgian journalist jailed for 30 days for criticising government figures online
On October 19, a Tbilisi court sentenced Formula TV anchor Vakho Sanaia to 30 days in jail for online comments criticizing the parliamentary speaker and another ruling party politician. This marked Sanaia's second detention and third penalty, following an earlier 14-day sentence in July for similar social media posts. The ruling occurred amid a broader government crackdown on dissent, facilitated by an Interior Ministry body established this summer to monitor speech deemed insulting or containing hate speech. Since the October 2024 parliamentary elections, the Georgian Dream party has pursued legal action against opposition figures and groups, prompting mass street demonstrations over concerns regarding an authoritarian shift and a frozen EU accession process.
