Malian acting Prime Minister visits Algeria for security talks
Malian acting Prime Minister General Abdoulaye Maiga arrived in Algiers on Monday for a two-day visit to meet with his counterpart, Sifi Ghrieb, and President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to strengthen bilateral cooperation. This visit followed the restoration of diplomatic ties in July 2026, which ended a year-long rift triggered by an April 2025 border incident where the Algerian army shot down a Malian drone. Relations had previously been strained by Malian accusations of Algerian interference regarding Tuareg rebel movements. The thaw in relations occurred as both nations acknowledged the necessity of sub-regional cooperation following shifts in Mali's international security partnerships.
