Unesco report finds nine out of ten crimes against journalists remain unpunished

On the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, a UNESCO report revealed that 86 percent of crimes against the press remain unpunished, with over 1,600 journalists murdered in the last two decades. The report, titled 'Threats evolve. Impunity endures,' noted a 20 percent increase in such killings over the past three years, largely attributed to rising numbers of armed conflicts in regions such as the Middle East, Ukraine, Somalia, and Sudan. While authorities in non-conflict zones have shown increased efforts to curb violence linked to organized crime, the report highlighted that impunity remains a systemic issue, particularly as nine out of ten victims are local journalists.

Mali and its Neighbours in the Sahel: A 2026 Overview

Mali, governed by a military-led transition under General Assimi Goïta, remains central to the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) alongside Burkina Faso and Niger. Following their departure from ECOWAS in January 2025, the three nations established a confederation, inaugurated an investment bank with CFA 500bn in capital, and formed a joint force now numbering 15,000 troops. Internal instability persists, marked by the assassination of General Sadio Camara on 25 April 2026, while the JNIM militant group has repeatedly blockaded critical fuel routes since September 2025.

Resolute Mining Reports Lower Gold Production at Syama Mine in Mali

Resolute Mining reported that its Syama gold mine in Mali produced 31,777 ounces of gold in the third quarter of 2026, forcing the company to lower its annual production forecast to 150,000-160,000 ounces. The shortfall was attributed to security disruptions, a prolonged plant roaster shutdown, and a shortage of explosives. While the company realized an average price of US$4,325 per ounce, operational costs remained high at US$2,596 per ounce for the Syama site. Resolute Mining is currently working to mitigate these supply issues by commissioning an on-site explosives plant in November and securing additional contractor equipment.

Mali Critic and Son Missing for Six Months

Lawyer and former government minister Mountaga Tall was abducted by unidentified gunmen in Bamako on May 2, 2026, followed by the disappearance of his son, Cheick Mamadou Tall, on May 16, 2026. Mali's military junta, which has ruled the nation since 2021, has neither acknowledged the detentions nor provided information regarding the men’s legal status or location. Human Rights Watch reported that the disappearances occurred amid a wider crackdown on political dissent, characterized by the suspension of media outlets and the dissolution of political parties. The United Nations Committee on Enforced Disappearances and international rights groups have formally demanded that the junta locate and release both individuals.

Algerian troops arrive in Niger for security deployment

On October 30, an Algerian military convoy arrived in Arlit, Niger, marking Algeria's first foreign troop deployment since 1973. The mission aimed to protect Algeria's energy and economic interests, specifically investments by the state-run firm Sonatrach and the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project. This deployment occurred despite Algeria's initial opposition to the July 2023 coup that installed a military government in Niger. The move signaled improved relations between the two nations following diplomatic tensions that arose last year.

Ivory Coast Monitors Northern Border Following Reports of Activity in Mali

A 25 October 2026 study by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation regarding the movement of the al-Qaeda-linked group JNIM in southwestern Mali prompted concerns regarding the security of Ivory Coast's northern border. While media reports suggested a new jihadist corridor into Ivorian territory, the study provided no evidence of territorial control or armed fronts within Guinea or Ivory Coast. General Ouattara Zoumana, commander of the army’s Northern Operational Zone, stated on 12 March 2026 that the military had successfully prevented the entry of terrorism, though he noted that regional instability remained a threat. The US Department of State currently maintains a Level 4 'Do Not Travel' advisory for the northern Savanes and Zanzan districts due to the risk of terrorism.

Mali drone strike kills 13 civilians according to activists

Human rights activists and the Azawad Liberation Front reported that a Malian military drone strike killed at least 13 civilians, including women and children, near the Mauritania border in Hassi Laghdaf early this week. The Malian military stated the operation targeted terrorists who were hiding motorcycles and gathering under cover, asserting the strike was successful. This event occurred within the context of a decade-long conflict in Mali involving al-Qaida-linked militants, Islamic State-affiliated fighters, and a northern Tuareg separatist rebellion.
