Dozens of Somali soldiers killed in battle with al Shabaab

Dozens of Somali soldiers were killed in a major battle with al Shabaab in the Jameeco area of the Buurhakaba district on October 27. The clash began when militants attacked the national army using vehicles packed with explosives, damaging five military vehicles. While the Somali defence ministry reported that government forces killed 75 militants and wounded 56, soldiers on the ground stated that dozens of army personnel died in the fighting. This event underscores the persistent two-decade-long insurgency by al Shabaab, a group seeking to establish Sharia law in the Horn of Africa nation.
