Former DRC President Joseph Kabila assumes leadership of eastern rebel forces
Former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila assumed leadership of rebel forces in the eastern region this week, prompting the Alliance Fleuve Congo and M23 coalition to rebrand as the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN). Under this new structure, Kabila serves as president, while Corneille Nangaa, Bertrand Bisimwa, and Sultani Makenga act as vice presidents. The move aimed to shift the rebels' image from a perceived Rwandan proxy to a national Congolese movement focused on removing President Felix Tshisekedi from power. Kabila, who previously faced a 2023 treason conviction in absentia and U.S. sanctions for supporting the rebellion, brings his political connections to Namibia, Kenya, and South Africa to the movement.
