Government of DRC accuses former President Kabila of ties to M23 rebels

Former DRC President Joseph Kabila announced the formation of a new political-military coalition, the Front pour la Refondation de la Nation (FRN), which includes M23 rebel leaders such as Sultani Makenga and former election commissioner Corneille Nangaa. The coalition, launched from Goma, stated its intent to end the current government's rule through any means, including force. This development follows a military court's death sentence against Kabila last year for alleged treason and ties to the M23-AFC alliance, as well as U.S. sanctions imposed in April for his purported funding of rebel groups.

UN envoy reports progress in diplomatic efforts for peace in DR Congo

UN special envoy Huang Xia reported a "window of opportunity" for peace in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) due to progress in diplomatic processes led by the United States and Qatar. Despite these diplomatic developments, including a July 2025 ceasefire commitment and a December peace deal between the DRC and Rwanda, the security and humanitarian situation in the region continued to worsen amid ongoing clashes involving the M23 armed group and the Congolese army. Huang emphasized the urgency of translating these diplomatic agreements into verifiable actions and announced that the UN would facilitate a meeting on October 18 in Lusaka for the defense ministers of Burundi, the DRC, Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania.
