IPC Projects 6 Million Haitians May Face Severe Hunger by 2027
On 28 October 2026, Haiti’s Provisional Electoral Council announced that the first round of presidential and legislative elections was rescheduled for 18 July 2027, with a potential runoff on 4 October. This decision followed the abandonment of previous dates in December 2026 and February 2027 amid persistent insecurity caused by armed gangs. Concurrently, an IPC analysis projected that severe hunger could affect 6.35 million Haitians by mid-2027, driven by violence, displacement, and El Niño-related agricultural disruptions. The UN-backed Gang Suppression Force remains understaffed, with only 1,500 of its 5,500 target personnel deployed.
